When is the Best Time to Feed New Grass?

Feed new grass seed

On the day of sowing, you can fertilise the lawn area where you sowed the seeds for convenience, but depending on the weather, this may not always be the best option. In example, if you have covered the seed with polythene sheeting, this may differ for a number of reasons. However, never fertilise a lawn before sowing it. Always feed new grass after it has sprouted in oversown or patch repaired lawns since several factors can affect seed germination and development. If it’s hot outside, avoid covering because doing so will cook your current lawn.

You should nourish the entire lawn with one of our seasonal fertilisers to help the new seedlings grow and the existing scarified grasses heal.

Feed new grass with fertiliser

Getting the roots well-established is one of the key goals while feeding seedlings. This means that phosphate and nitrogen must be present in the fertilisers. N and P stand for NPK. When beginning a new lawn from seed or turf, the decision is quite simple because the starter fertiliser has this.

Use a seasonal fertiliser when overseeding so that you can feed the seedlings while also encouraging the recovery of the existing grasses. We advise utilising phosphate-containing ones, at the very least for the initial feed following germination. For the initial feed, this can include applying a fertiliser made for sandy soil to a clay soil. When you start feeding later, use the seasonal fertiliser that is appropriate for the season, your soil, and your feeding preferences.

If you are planting in a season when rain is reliably forecast, such as in the mild spring or fall, or if you have access to frequent irrigation, you can either feed the seed just before planting it or wait until it sprouts. Your decision is yours.

Nevertheless, if the weather is forecast to be dry, windy, or hot or if you are unable to water, always feed the seed after it has germinated. For this, apply the starter fertiliser.

Germination is quite reliable when polythene is placed over the seeded lawn. Feeding at the time of seeding is the best and most practical choice because there won’t be any watering till the polythene is removed. Remove the polythene as soon as possible after germination if you’re doing this in warmer conditions (not hot), to avoid cooking the seedlings. For this, apply the starter fertiliser.

When can you walk on new grass

You can always take a leisurely stroll on your new lawn while wearing shoes with smooth soles, but you should attempt to limit how frequently you do so and avoid using the same path. You might need to do this to water certain sections or top them off with seed. Seed, seedlings, or recently put turf won’t be harmed. However, you shouldn’t twist, leap, or sprint because these actions could disturb seed or uproot turf.

Once your grass has established and is growing well you will now need to consider buying a Lawnmower. Over at our online shop we sell all types of lawnmowers from petrol and electric to state of the art battery models. We also offer installation, advice and sales of Robotic Mowers too.
